Question 2: Where will the Nationals be this Year?

Answer: We are proud to announce that the 2017 USAPA National Championships tournament will be held at Palm Creek Golf & RV Resort in Casa Grande, AZ.

Question 3: Who is eligible to play in the USAPA National Tournament?

Answer: Players, age 8 and above (as of 12/31/17) may play in the Age divisions so long as they are a member in good standing of the USAPA.

Question 4: Who is eligible to play in the Open or the Senior Open Divisions?

Answer: The Open Events are for 5.0 and 4.5 rated USAPA Members.  Should the number of players register exceed the capacity of the venue, the USAPA rated 5.0 players will be given priority.  The remaining capacity will be filled with 4.5 rated players with priority based on the earliest complete registration date. 4.5 players who register for Open Events but do not play in the Open Events due to lack of space will receive a full refund for all event fees paid and be given an option to withdraw from the tournament and receive a full refund of all registration and event fees paid. It is the player’s responsibility to ensure that their 4.5 or higher rating is a USAPA/IFP Rating as posted on USAPA.org. Ratings in various tournament software systems (i.e. pickleballtournaments.com) are not eligible. In addition, the player must have an official USAPA/IFP Rating of 4.5 or higher by 9/16/17, to participate in any open category at Nationals. Also, see FAQ Question 5.

Question 5: Can I play in both the Open and the Senior Open Divisions in the same event (i.e. Mixed Doubles)?

Answer: No, players may only play in one Open division per event. Example: Male Player A (50 and above) may not play in both Senior Open Mixed Doubles and Open Mixed Doubles. However, Male player A (50 and above) may play in Senior Open Mixed Doubles and Open Men’s Doubles.

Question 6: Will this tournament have skill level (3.5, 4.0, etc.) events?

Answer: Yes, age/skill events will be played the first 5 days of the tournament (11/4-8).  Any age/skill events that do not have enough entries will be combined with another age/skill division.

Question 7:  PPF Event – If I qualified for the PPF event, may I also play the skill/age event if they are held on different days?

Answer:  No, FFP players must play in either the PPF or in age/skill – not both.

Question 8: How do I determine my rating or skill level?

Answer: Go to www.usapa.org and find the ‘Tournaments & Ratings’ menu.  The the IFP/USAPA Ratings tab, you can see the current Player Rating List,  see What Are Ratings, review Rating Descriptions and find information on How to Get an Official Rating.

Skill levels are determined by the skill level specified on your registration form; however, if you have a current USAPA/IFP rating, the USAPA/IFP published rating will be used. In all cases, your final skill level may be adjusted at the discretion of the tournament directors based on recent tournament results.

Question 9: What day do I play?

Answer: Click Here to view the Play Schedule. Detailed event start time schedules will be developed for each day after charts have been created. They will be available no later than October 28, 2017 on pickleballtournaments.com.

Question 10: What determines my age?

Answer: Your eligible age is the age you will be on December 31, 2017.

Question 11: Can Juniors play in 19+ events?

Answer: Yes. They must pay $10 for each 19+ event they enter. Junior players may not play in both junior events and 19+ events. Juniors can play in a junior division or in an adult division but not in both.

Question 12: For doubles age events, what determines the age bracket of the team?

Answer: If both players are 19 or older, the age of the youngest player is used to determine the age group bracket. At the time of registration, a player or team may select to play in an age group younger than the team’s youngest player. Example: A team of two 64 year old players may play in any age group below the age of 60 except juniors. This will be allowed at the time of registration only.

If both players are under 19, the age of the oldest player is used to select the age group for junior events. If a junior (8-18) is playing with a non-junior (19+), 19 will be used; they will play in the 19+ group. Players may play in any age group for which they qualify. Example: A 52-year-old player may play in 19+, 35+, or 50+. Players may choose only one age group in each event. The age groups do not need to be the same. Example: A 59-year-old player may play in 19+ for Doubles, in 50+ for Mixed Doubles and 55+ for Singles. Juniors may select junior age group events or 19+ age group events. All 4.5 or above players can enter Open Division events.

Question 13: How many players will be allowed in each division?

Answer: Player limits are at the discretion of the tournament directors, who reserve the right to limit the number of players playing in each event. All players are encouraged to register as early as possible to increase their opportunity of securing their place at the USAPA National Championships.  A wait list will be available for each event if the event is filled. NOTE: Some divisions may be closed ahead of the registration deadline pending total registration numbers. Any age/skill events that do not have enough entries will be combined with another age/skill division.

Question 14a: When I registered I listed my partner. Does listing my partner register him or her as well?

Answer: No. Every player must submit his or her own registration. Only those individuals who have submitted their own registrations and paid registration and event fees by October 15, 2017 will be considered registered. Registration includes providing contact information, selecting events/partners and paying all fees. When a participant provides contact information their name is listed among players registered for the tournament and their name may appear on the “Needs Partner List” if they have registered for an event but have not identified a partner. However, participants who have not paid all of their fees are not considered completely registered. Registration fees are calculated at the time the participant completes the registration by paying their fees. Early registration for the 2017 National Championships is $75 from August 1, 2017 when registration opens until September 30, 2017. Registration for National Championships is $100 from October 1, 2017 until registration closes October 15. 2017. No registrations are accepted after October 15, 2017.

Question 14b: What if I need a partner?

Answer: If you need a partner, try using the USAPA’s Partner Search page for a general list of available players.  For specific events, click here and select the ‘Players Needing Partners’ button.

Question 15: After the final registration deadline of October 15, 2017, can I change a partner?

Answer: In some instances, yes; such as a partner illness or injury. The substitution can only be made with a player already registered in the tournament and in that age group. Any substitution is subject to approval of the tournament director(s).

Question 16: What if my partner gets hurt during the tournament; can I get another partner for my other events?

Answer: You can only get a partner from those already registered in the tournament. You cannot substitute another player once the event starts. If you or your partner can’t play, please notify the USAPA at nationalsreg@usapa.org. We can possibly find a replacement for you or your partner. If not, at least we know the withdrawing player will not be showing up the day of the event. All changes after the registration deadline are subject to tournament director approval.

Question 17: Why must I check-in each day I play?

Answer: You must check-in each play day so we know if all the players have arrived, can verify USAPA membership and ensure tournament registration is in order. Players will not be allowed to play if any part of their registration is incomplete or their event fees have not been paid.

Question 18: Will the results be live on the Internet?

Answer: Yes. See pickleballtournaments.com.  Results will be posted on the Internet as soon as a match is completed and the score sheet is returned to the Tournament Desk. Court assignments and match waiting lists will be updated when the score sheets are entered.

Question 19: Will there be water at the courts?

Answer: Yes, water will be provided but you must provide your own drinking bottle.

Question 20: Will there be parking near the courts?

No registrations will be accepted after the October 15, 2017 deadline. No exceptions will be allowed.

Question 26: When I try to register online, it asks for my USAPA membership number. How do I get a USAPA membership number?

Answer: Go to www.usapa.org and apply for a USAPA membership (or renew your membership if it is set to expire before Nov. 13, 2017). Your USAPA membership number will not be active until you have paid your USAPA membership dues. To ensure that your USAPA membership is processed promptly, it is suggested that you use PayPal for payment. Memberships completed and paid online are processed in real time and players will receive an email with their member number. Players who opt to pay for their membership with a mailed check are placed in a ‘pending status’ and must wait for their payment to be received, processed and cleared before receiving their member number.  This could take 10-14 days.

Question 27: When I try to register online, it says my USAPA membership number is not valid. Why?

Answer: The USAPA membership number you are entering is either not correct or your USAPA membership has expired or will expire during the tournament and you will need to renew your USAPA membership. If you have questions regarding your USAPA membership, contact the USAPA member services at membership@usapa.org.

Question 28: How do I pay my registration and event fees?

Answer: Preferred payment method is online via PayPal or any major credit card.

Paying Online:
When paying online, you will be directed to a PayPal page, however you do not need a PayPal account – you can pay using any major credit card. If you use PayPal or a credit card, your payment information will be forwarded to the USAPA registration department. The USAPA has a PayPal account but has no control over how PayPal handles your account. If you encounter any problems with PayPal, you need to contact PayPal. The USAPA is not responsible for any registration or event fee payments not processed by PayPal. Once an online payment is received along with the registration form, the player is considered registered.

Paying with a Check:
Players may also send a personal check by mail. If you choose to send a personal check by mail, you must ensure it is postmarked by 11:59 PDT October 15, 2017. There is no additional fee for checks as long as the registration form is completed online and you are only mailing a check. Players however are NOT considered registered until their check is received and processed.

Mailed Registrations:
Players who elect to submit a hard copy registration form must include an additional $10.00 for processing. If you choose to mail a hard copy form, it must be postmarked by October 15, 2017. Also, players are NOT considered registered until their registration and payment received and processed.

Question 29: When are my fees due?

Answer: Fees are due at the time of registration. Players who submit a registration but not a payment are NOT registered. Players are not included in an event until registration and event fees are paid in full.

Question 30: My rating is higher than what I specified when I registered, why did it change?

Answer: We check all players’ skill ratings. If your USAPA/IFP rating is higher than the rating you listed on your registration, the USAPA/IFP rating will be used.

Question 31: When will the player’s lists be posted and start times be available?

Answer:  A list of all players who register will be available starting August 1, 2017. Player/partner lists by event will be available within a few days after registration closes on October 15, 2017 and all registrations have been processed. Detailed start times will be available no later than November 2, 2017 after charts have been created and seeded. Court assignments and matches waiting lists will be available at midnight the day that each event is to be played.

Question 32: When are the charts for play going to be posted?

Answer: Charts will be posted for each Division and Event at midnight on the day of play for that event. However, due to last minute team or player withdrawals, charts may change until the scheduled start time for an event.

Question 33: Will food be available at the courts?

Answer: Palm Creek will provide reasonably priced breakfast and lunch specials at the courts. Times TBA.

Question 34: Does the USAPA have a Host Home program?

Answer: No, the USAPA does not have a Host Home program. However, the USAPA has made special arrangements with Palm Creek for rentals options and discount rates at local hotels in Casa Grande. Please go to the Accommodations link to see the hotel list and be sure to say “USAPA” to secure the special discount rate when making your reservation.

Question 35: What if I want to register for a doubles event, but I don’t have a partner?

Answer: We have a feature on our website called “Partner Search”.  We recommend you check Partner Search to see if you can find a partner before you register. In addition, players who have registered for an event without a partner can be viewed by clicking the “Needs Partner” button on pickleballtournaments.com. If you register without a partner, you have until midnight PST August 15, 2017, to register with a partner, sign the waiver and pay the registration and event fees. If both partners have not completed these items you will automatically be moved to the wait list and priority given to teams on the wait list that have met each of those requirements.

Question 36: If I have to cancel my registration and withdraw from the tournament, can I get a refund?

Answer: Yes, as long as the request meets the USAPA National Tournament Refund Policy: All National Tournament refund requests must be emailed to: nationalsreg@usapa.org and received by October 15, 2017 11:59 PM PDT. The USAPA’s cancellation policy for National Championships is:

Registrations are considered complete when all fees have been paid. Registrations may be made but not paid. Player names will appear in the alphabetic list of players. A player’s request for a partner will automatically appear on pickleballtournaments.com in the Needs Partner list.

Registrations made but not paid in full before September 30, 2017 will pay the late registration fee of $100 instead of the early registration fee of $75. No registrations will be accepted unless made or postmarked before 11:59 PM PDT October 15, 2017. Cancellations and requests for refunds must be postmarked or emailed by 11:59 PM PDT October 15, 2017. Requests sent after this date will not qualify for a refund. Refunds for medical reasons will be processed if accompanied by documentation from a treating physician and emailed or postmarked before October 31, 2017 at 11:59 PM PDT. No refunds will be granted for events not played for any reasons, including a medical withdrawal by a partner.

Registration and event fees will be refunded less a $20 processing fee. Refunds will be processed as a credit to the original form of payment where possible. Checks will only be issued when electronic forms of payment are not available (ie. closed accounts or other reasons precluding an electronic transaction). Refunds will be processed by November 30, 2017.

There will be no refunds for events that are cancelled due to inclement weather.
